There right from the start

The EDEKA Arena, which opened in March 2023, is not only the largest hall in the Offenburg trade fair complex and expands the available space enormously with 7,000 m², it also impresses with its flexible use for major events. In addition to trade fairs, concerts, congresses, exhibitions and major shows and sporting events, it can also be used for television productions, for example. A mobile grandstand offers seating for up to 1,750 spectators, while concerts etc. can accommodate around 8,800 people. ZWP was already involved in the project during the architectural competition and was therefore able to familiarize itself with the task at an early stage and develop initial energy concepts.

System of short distances

The interior use of the exhibition hall, which has a clear height of 14 meters, is not only highly functional and highly flexible, it has also set new technical standards. The keywords in this context are improved energy efficiency and reduced consumption of resources. Heating is provided by the Offenburg district heating network, which has a very good primary energy factor. Radiant ceiling panels heat the hall, which guarantees uniform temperatures throughout the room and has a positive effect on the indoor climate. Radiant heat also means energy savings and is also a simple, virtually maintenance-free system.

All rooms are mechanically ventilated by means of scenic air pattern and air volume control of the air outlets, i.e. the supply air is individually regulated and supplied to the hall in precise doses. In addition to the cooling function, all ventilation systems have an extremely efficient heat recovery system.

Sustainability a top priority

Sustainability was a top priority for Daniel Klenert, Technical Director of Messe Offenburg-Ortenau GmbH. In order to reduce the ecological footprint, ZWP designed an infiltration trough for rainwater in the central avenue of plane trees in addition to the high-performance photovoltaic system on the hall roof. The roofs of the foyer and the storage areas were designed as green roofs - so nothing stands in the way of a little natural paradise!
