The new Ortenau Clinic in Achern marks an important milestone towards modern healthcare. ZWP plays a crucial role in designing and implementing energy-efficient measures in this project.
The planned construction includes five levels with a total usable area of around 15,200 m²; the building structure is intended to be flexible, open, and modular. High energy efficiency is targeted: the project aims to meet the standards of an Efficiency House 40 (BEG) — meaning it must fulfill the highest requirements for building envelope and energy concept. According to calculations, the new hospital will consume only about one-third of the current energy usage. Three groundwater heat pumps with three suction and intake wells will meet the energy demand, enabling the hospital to operate entirely without fossil fuels. Moving away from fossil energy sources is a significant step toward greater independence, CO₂ reduction, and price stability.
Big BIM
ZWP’s extensive experience in Building Information Modeling (BIM) also plays a key role in the Ortenau Clinic project. The goal was to ensure interdisciplinary communication among all involved parties and the continuous use of a shared digital building model — from the very beginning! Big BIM — across all disciplines, trades, and lifecycle phases. All project participants work within the same software environment (Closed BIM), in this case Revit. An additional advantage of ZWP’s comprehensive BIM service is closer collaboration with clients and partners. Because: a shared model provides transparent communication options and promotes a partnership-based project execution.
Lighting technology
The patient rooms on the intensive care unit feature wall-mounted luminaires with Tunable White technology, which offer biodynamic lighting through a fixed programmed brightness and color temperature progression. This promises better recovery for patients, whose biorhythms are often disturbed after anesthesia, and notably a significantly reduced susceptibility to delirium. The operation is particularly simple due to automatic programming: the examination light can be manually switched on at the luminaire housing. The delivery rooms are also equipped with Tunable White lighting, arranged in playful, scattered circular ceiling fixtures of different sizes, where the color temperature is not automatic but selected via a button press according to the needs of the women in labor. The corridors are accompanied by light strips along one of the walls, with lighting levels sufficient for minor treatments at the parked beds on that side. The DALI control allows for nighttime dimming of the entire light strips.
