New Construction of a Healthcare Campus With 330 Beds and a Central Supply Concept

As part of the restructuring of hospital services in the Ortenau district, a new healthcare campus is being developed in Lahr. The new hospital building features an L-shaped structure with staggered volumes ranging from two to five storeys.

Its architectural orientation towards the town and the federal road establishes a clear connection to the Langenwinkel district. An avenue with an accompanying colonnade leads to the hospital’s main entrance and provides weather-protected access to key campus areas, including the bus stop, taxi stands and adjacent facilities such as a medical centre, staff accommodation and a nursing school. The overall site plan also includes designated areas for a potential ambulance station, a multi-storey car park, and future hospital extensions.

The hospital building comprises a basement, a ground floor, three upper floors with core medical functions, and a fourth floor primarily housing technical systems. A helipad is planned on the roof. The building will accommodate approximately  330 beds and include emergency and diagnostic departments, as well as operating theatres of categories 1a and 1b. Commissioning is scheduled for autumn 2032.

ZWP is responsible for the planning of the Technical Building Services (TBS) for the new hospital. This includes the design and coordination of systems for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, cooling generation, and potable and  wastewater installations. Additional systems covered comprise electrical systems, IT and communications systems, and building automation systems.

The building's energy supply is expected to be provided primarily via geothermal energy. In addition, photovoltaic systems are planned for both roof and parking areas. Technical plant rooms are distributed across the basement, the fourth floor, and the roof levels.

To ensure the secure operation of medical gases such as compressed air and CO2, the central supply units will be implemented redundantly. The vertical routing of building services is provided via fire-zoned service shafts. The planning also takes into account the integration of lift and conveyance systems, including several lifts and a pneumatic tube system for internal logistics.
