Laboratory building A6 of the firm of BYK-Chemie GmbH is 5-story, medium-height building with a basement and 5 above-ground floors. It houses some 33 laboratories and processing systems for the areas of applications engineering, thermoplastics, new products, plastics and polyurethane.
Analysis and synthesis laboratories are housed on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Facilities for a technical school's equipment, such as a press, injection molding machine, extruder, SMC system, foaming system, etc., are located, along with attached laboratories and additional rooms, on the ground floor and in the basement. The press, which extends over two stories, is located on a vibration-absorbing base within a separate room attached in front of the building. In the southern section of the building, and over an area extending from the ground floor to the 3rd floor, an office/administrative area adjoins the laboratory and equipment areas. Along with PUR laboratories and facilities for PUR-technology instruction, the basement contains 3 storage units complying with the ordinance on protection of water bodies against water-hazardous liquids (VWF), as well as additional, multi-purpose storage units, laundry and changing rooms. The top floor has been reserved for building services systems.
Access into the building is provided by two stairways, one on the building's north side and one on its south side. A passenger elevator is attached to the south stairway, while a freight elevator borders the north stairway. In addition, the building can be accessed via connections to an older building complex: a bridge on the 2nd story and a connecting tunnel on the basement level.
